Where to See Manatees Around Tampa Bay: A Local Guide

Wondering where to see manatees around Tampa Bay? From Apollo Beach to Tampa's downtown waterfront and the waters around St. Petersburg, manatees can be found throughout the region. Manatees are one of Florida's most beloved animals, and Tampa Bay offers several opportunities to spot these gentle giants in the wild.

During the cooler months, manatees search for warmer water and can sometimes gather in impressive numbers. But you don't necessarily have to visit a major attraction to encounter one. Manatees travel throughout Tampa Bay's rivers, canals, bays and coastal waters.

Here are some of the places around Tampa Bay where you may have an opportunity to see them.

1. Manatee Viewing Center — Apollo Beach

If seeing a manatee is your main goal, start with the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach during cooler weather. The other locations in this guide offer possible sightings, but manatees are wild animals and sightings aren't guaranteed.

If you're specifically hoping to see manatees, the Manatee Viewing Center at Tampa Electric's Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach is probably the best-known manatee destination in the Tampa Bay area.

During cold weather, manatees are attracted to the warm water around the power station.

The viewing center provides elevated observation areas where visitors can watch the animals without disturbing them.

The experience can be especially impressive during a strong Florida cold front, when large numbers of manatees may gather in the warm water.

Local tip: Watch the weather. Cooler periods generally provide a better chance of seeing larger numbers of manatees.

2. Apollo Beach Nature Preserve

Not far from the Manatee Viewing Center is another beautiful Tampa Bay destination: Apollo Beach Nature Preserve.

The preserve provides views of Tampa Bay and is an excellent place to experience the coastal environment that makes this part of Florida special.

A manatee sighting isn't guaranteed, but manatees travel through the waters around Apollo Beach.

Even when the manatees aren't cooperating, the preserve is worth visiting for its waterfront views, birdlife and sunsets.

3. The Alafia River

The Alafia River flows into Hillsborough Bay just north of Apollo Beach.

Manatees travel through Florida rivers and estuaries in search of food, freshwater and suitable habitat, which means patient observers occasionally encounter them in waterways like the Alafia.

Unlike visiting a dedicated viewing center, spotting a manatee here is much more about being in the right place at the right time.

Watch for a nose breaking the surface, a broad back slowly rolling through the water or the distinctive circular disturbance left behind when a manatee dives.

4. Hillsborough River

You don't necessarily have to leave Tampa to have a chance of encountering a manatee.

The Hillsborough River connects directly with Tampa Bay and runs through the heart of the city.

Manatees can travel into rivers and other waterways, so sightings occasionally occur in and around Tampa's urban waterfront.

It's one of the things that makes Tampa Bay remarkable: wildlife and city life can sometimes exist surprisingly close together.

5. Tampa's Downtown Waterfront

Keep your eyes on the water when you're walking around Tampa's waterfront.

Areas along the Tampa Riverwalk, Garrison Channel and surrounding waterways are connected directly with Tampa Bay.

A sighting here isn't something you should expect on every visit, but manatees do move through Tampa's waterways.

If you see people suddenly stopping and looking over a railing, take a look.

Sometimes the attraction isn't a boat passing by.

6. Upper Tampa Bay

The northern portions of Tampa Bay contain shallow coastal environments, creeks and estuaries that provide habitat for a tremendous variety of Florida wildlife.

Manatees can move through these waters as they travel around the bay.

This isn't necessarily the destination we'd recommend to someone who has only one afternoon and absolutely wants to see a manatee.

But it illustrates an important point:

Manatees aren't confined to manatee attractions.

They're part of the Tampa Bay ecosystem.

7. St. Petersburg and Pinellas County Waters

Cross the bay and you're still in manatee country.

Manatees can be encountered in waterways around St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, particularly as they move between feeding areas and other suitable habitats.

Boaters, kayakers and people spending time along the waterfront occasionally encounter them.

If you're fortunate enough to see one from the water, give it plenty of room and allow the animal to determine where it wants to go.

8. Fort De Soto and Southern Pinellas County

The waters around Fort De Soto contain extensive shallow-water and coastal habitats.

While most people associate Fort De Soto with beaches, kayaking, fishing, birds and spectacular Tampa Bay scenery, the surrounding waters are also part of Florida manatee habitat.

As with most natural wildlife encounters, patience—and a little luck—helps.

When Is the Best Time to See Tampa Bay Manatees?

Winter is generally the most interesting season for dedicated manatee watching.

Manatees are sensitive to prolonged exposure to water temperatures below approximately 68°F (20°C).

When Tampa Bay cools, manatees seek dependable sources of warmer water.

That's why cold fronts can produce such dramatic gatherings at places like Apollo Beach.

During warmer weather, the animals disperse much more widely.

That doesn't mean they've disappeared.

They're simply exploring the enormous network of waterways that make up their Tampa Bay home.

How to Watch Manatees Responsibly

Remember that these are wild animals.

Give manatees space and observe them passively.

Never chase, grab, ride, feed or give water to a manatee. Boaters should also remain especially alert in areas frequented by manatees.

Sometimes the best encounter is simply watching quietly as one swims past.
